African Bow Hunting

Okatjuru Safaris was the first bow hunting operation when archery became legal in Namibia in 1996.
Jochen, who is a qualified IBEP instructor, has assisted in the acceptance of archery by the Namibian Government and also instructed during the first three courses held for the licensing of bow hunting guides.

We have set aside 15 000 acres for bowhunting only.
The hunting takes place mostly out of blinds and elevated stands, occasionally using the stalking method.
You would hunt for most part of the day, the most productive time being between noon and 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon. Since a lot of game will be visiting the watering holes, it is advisable to bring a video camera.
The success rates are high, and once could bag between one or two animals a day.

You will be accompanied by a professional hunter/guide at all times, since this is prescribed by Namibian law.
The blinds will be large enough for three people, so you can bring an observer along. The shots can be taken in a standing position, and distances are typically between 10 - 30 yards.

The best months are between July and November, during which time it will be dry, with the possibility of an odd shower or so in October or November.

Equipment to bring with you:

1 bow and extra string, sights, arrow rest, peep and nocks
Or 2 complete bows
1 spare release aid
24 arrows (at least)
Broadheads: Suggest the replaceable blades like Muzzy or Thunderheads
Expandable broadheads for smaller game only
Binoculars
Wide angle camera for trophy pictures

The best months for archery are between June and November, which is our dry season.

Traditional archers are obviously welcome too. We will get you close enough (12 - 15 yards).

There will be an archery range right outside the door of your bungalow.

Additional Equipment

You should bring a hat or cap and sunscreen of a high SPF.

Since there is a lot of grass you will need ankle covering boots and long pants that do not pick up burrs (like jeans or strong camo pants). You can wear camo clothes here, as long as it is not in public (at the airport for ex.). We recommend any Realtree, advantage, skyline etc. while Khaki clothes are good for your sightseeing trip or during dinner time.
For more information about clothing see our Terrain / clothing page

We have a daily laundry service, so you don't have to bring too much clothing.
